The Grounded Ascent: Running for My Warrior Goddess

The miles we cover are often a reflection of the lives we lead—a blend of grit, uncertainty, and, ultimately, the clarity that comes from enduring. This year, the 26.2 miles of the Big Sur International Marathon have taken on a profound new meaning. I am running to honor my wife, Jill—my "warrior goddess."

Jill’s journey with a brain tumor began nine years ago, long before we met. A grand mal seizure on a Christmas morning led to the discovery of a large meningioma, followed by a craniotomy and radiation. She faced that recovery with a level of resilience that defines the very spirit of a warrior.

Recently, we faced a new challenge when a follow-up MRI revealed a small, new tumor. But today, I write this with an immense sense of gratitude: Jill has completed her radiation treatment, everything went exactly as planned, and she is doing incredibly well. I believe that even when we are tethered to the earth by our feet, our spirits are capable of flight. Jill proves this once again.

As I take to the pavement along the California coast, her unwavering spirit will be my North Star. When the elevation rises and the wind pushes back, I will remember the grace she showed in the face of adversity. Knowing that we have already raised over $5,000 for the National Brain Tumor Society (NBTS) provides the final surge of motivation I need.

I run because movement is how I commune with the world. This year, every step is a testament to Jill’s resilience, a celebration of her health, and a mission to support others who are affected by brain tumors.

Effort leads to answers. And this year, the answer is hope.
